History of Victorian Corsets and the Corset Trends in That Era

The period of Victorian corsets can be attributed between 1840 and 1910. But, corsets were in practice in other European parts and they were mostly worn as innerwear so they were hard to observe and could not flourish in those times. They were primarily used to keep the body in shape by cinching the waist and raising the bust. The 19th century saw its widespread usage and special designs were made so that they could be worn as normal clothes.

The popularity of corsets in those period can simple be adjudged from the fact that women and ladies belong to all the strata of society wore them. Though the fashion for the design originated from the elite class ladies but it easily meandered through the lower groups that found the cheap replicas. The Victorian era was signified by the trend of tight corset that was considered as the symbol of etiquette and artificial life, a prevailing trend in those days. It has come into light that waist 14-18 inches was the desire and hence the corsets were used to be too tight, almost constricting the ladies for breath. But, it seems these were desires only as the collections of Victorian corsets in museums show the range between 20-22 inches.

The ladies were supposed to look beautiful, curvaceous and appealing without any skin show. They were also required to attract men who could marry her. So, provoking curves and ostentatious figures could only be shown through eth tight worn corsets in those times and the trend that had its origin in the social compulsion, continued and ladies were themselves found willing to wear the corsets in the Victorian era.

Difference between Basques, Corsets and Bustiers

I see people often confuse with the basques, corsets and bustiers as they consider them same. However, there is some similarity in them but it’s only in the first glance. These dresses are starkly different from each other. Let us know about them in brief to understand the differences more clearly.

Basques:Basques can be assumes as thin corsets and they are actually used as undergarments. They have plastic boning with the design of cups resembling corsets but the boning is not sufficient or strong enough to let your waist appear in reduced size. These inner-wears are measured in terms of bra size or body size. They can also be visualized as an extended form of bra.

Bustiers:They also seem like corsets but they can be only worn as tops or undergarments. They too have plastic boning or steel front busk but that is not sufficient to reduce the waist or size and shape. This is perfect for people who wish to give a look of wearing a corset but they do not want to bear the discomfort of wearing corset.

Corsets:Corsets involve steel (metal) boning and it can be worn as an undergarment (in earlier days) or top. These corsets are measured in inches when closing around the waist. These corsets reduce your waist and enhance the bust. They present the hourglass figure of the ladies and are highly popular party wears these days. And we will be discussing more about these corsets in our future posts.
